I'm Amanda - thanks for dropping by! I am currently living in Chicago, finishing up grad school at DePaul.
Ask me about my...
Growing up, my family moved every couple of years when my dad was reassigned. This meant my 2 older sisters were my closest confidantes and with no shortage of new places to explore, adventure was never far.
We sought out special places - the more secluded, the better. I fell in love with forest clearings and hidden graveyards. I wrote ballads of our daring exploits and developed a proclivity for performance. Most importantly, I learned how to make people laugh!
Adulthood stifles adventure, to an extent, but I found it again through design. Studying landscape architecture at The Ohio State University (O-H! I-O!), I worked with professors to break down my preconceptions of design. They encouraged me to revisit the elements of my childhood that made it special and to incorporate those into my projects.
Here, I remembered that I love making people happy - my undergrad portfolio is a reflection of that.
After graduating, I found that while I love design, landscape was not my preferred medium. I took a job as a production assistant in Chicago and taught myself to code on the side. Coding was a breath of fresh air. I found comfort in the structure. Compared to landscape design, I felt that there was a correct answer. But I began to miss the creative aspects of design.
When I found out about UX, it was like a puzzle piece clicking into place. I get to research, collaborate, design, and code. Not to mention working directly with users has grounded my projects in reality. I've found myself learning more about my interests than at any other point in my life, and I'm so excited to continue doing so!
My favorites are the Nancy Drew computer games (anyone who has played them will understand), but I also enjoy indie and adventure video games! I'm currently playing It Takes Two (with my roommate) and Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
I have a penchant for mysteries and science fiction, but I like all kinds of fiction! I am in the middle of Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series.
Who doesn't love food and coffee? My current go-to food spot in Chicago is Mammoth Poké and my favorite coffee joint is Intelligentsia - a bit expected, but they know their way around a latte!
My family loves to ski, but opportunities for that are rare. Instead, when it's nice out in Chicago, I'll toss a frisbee or play some pickleball (the fastest growing sport in America!).
